Welcome to Part 2 of my Tech Trends 2019 video blog. Now I couldn't do one of these videos without talking about Artificial Intelligence.  It was the buzz word of 2018. And a focus area for all the big vendors including Microsoft, Amazon and Google.

The Rise of AI

The buzz around AI in last year, for me was just the starting point.  Not many Enterprises were using Artificial Intelligence (AI), or even understood how to use it.

Sure, we saw a lot in the consumer world. For example, the rise of Alexa, Siri, and even Cortana to a certain extent.

But in enterprise I.T we haven't seen AI be widely adopted.

I think this will change this year.

So, how do we make use of Artificial Intelligence within traditional Enterprise I.T?

We need to focus on the different use cases for Artificial Intelligence.

So, looking at the datasets and finding out what is useful data in our organisations. Then starting to put the data into normalised formats and into cloud computing models.

We can then start to access this data and wrap machine algorithms around it to learn data behaviours and analytics.

By layering on AI and getting computers to answer key questions for the Enterprise, we can start to deliver value and make decisions.

I think that's going to be the big trend for 2019 from a data centre perspective.

Overcoming Challenges in 2019

We are all going to have to be on top of our game to keep up with technology innovation.  And the sheer rate of change is going to be one of the key challenges.

Maintaining skills or finding skills for technologies is an ongoing challenge.

We all know that there's a skills shortage in I.T.  But there’s a real skill shortage in specific areas.; there's very few data scientists or experts in AI and Machine Learning.

So, I think there's going to have to be a big commitment from all the big vendors, and all the systems integrators, like us, to try and develop these skills.

And to make these truly game-changing technologies become a reality for organisations.

The Importance of Digital Ethics

The other important thing I think we're going to see in 2019 is the concept of digital ethics.

Artificial Intelligence is an incredibly powerful technology. But put in the wrong hands, it can be misused, and then, quite easily, become mistrusted.

I think it's vital from the producers of these platforms, like Amazon and Microsoft, to work together and put some principles around this.

Used in the wrong way, we'll just start to spiral out of control and I think it's human nature then to distrust. This will then cause more barriers going forward.

Making sure IT is Connected to the Business

The last trend is about connecting IT with business users.

In the past I.T. were siloed. They cared about the power, the cooling, the CPU cycles, the memory of their Estates. But they didn’t really understand what applications actually deliver to end users.

One of the vital things we must understand is how these game-changing technologies can be used in real world scenarios within organisations.

Our own Enterprise Architects are there to do just that - to talk in a business language.

So, it's going to be a very exciting year ahead.

I will conduct more of these video blogs as the year goes on, because every week things are changing.

But hopefully you found this interesting.
