Hyperconverged. As an Infrastructure Architect, I spend my time analysing the optimum design for infrastructure. In my previous thought piece on Hyperconverged & Cloud. I discussed how data is king. And how a Hybrid IT model helps organisations put data in the best place, and to best use.  Here, I delve a little deeper, looking at the platforms driving innovation, and in particular, the top level benefits of HPE’s SimpliVity.

By 2018, over half of large organizations globally will compete using advanced analytics and proprietary algorithms, causing the disruption of entire industries. (Gartner Data & Analytics Summit 2017)

Hybrid IT: The Data Challenges

One of the biggest inhibitors for organisations moving to Hybrid IT revolves around that word again. Yes, DATA. We have huge amounts of it already and it's growing at a phenomenal rate.

By 2020 the digital universe – the data we create and copy annually – will reach 44 zettabytes, or 44 trillion gigabytes. (IDC Digital Universe of Opportunities)

It’s not only the volume of data that’s the issue. It’s also the access routes. Networks tend to be inadequate. Arguably, it’s like using an old country lane, heaving with tractors to get somewhere fast. So how do customers migrate data onto the new breed of on-premises infrastructure or into the Cloud?

Data Assessment & Optimisation

Optimisation! This is the key word. Organisations need to optimise their data with an effective data lifecycle management approach. This starts with understanding what data you have, what is of value now and what might be of value in the immediate future. (By-the-way, this shouldn’t include the data that was of value once upon a time. This data needs to be packed away safely, in case ever needed.)

And this is why a Data Assessment can be critical. It delivers a comprehensive view of existing data and file workloads to determine where they optimally reside.  You can then get a much better understanding of data performance and associated applications.  And crucially, it can help determine security, compliance and risks aligned to data usage.

HPE SimpliVity: The Right Data in the Right Place at the Right Time

Once you understand what data you have and what is of value, you then need to put that data in the right place, at the right time. And on a platform that can fully optimise it and continue to keep it optimised throughout its lifecycle. Step in HPE SimpliVity.

SimpliVity has been an innovator in this area since its inception in 2009 and has now been acquired by HPE for, a relatively modest, $650m.  Innovation has been at the core of this hyper-converged start-up. They asked: “why do you need to store data on multiple platforms, in multiple formats for primary, archive and backup data?” They questioned what, up until now, everyone else had just accepted.

The short answer is, you don’t. This approach is inefficient and drives up costs.  The  “that's the way we've always done it" response just simply isn't acceptable any more.

The future is storing data in one format, de-duped and compressed from the off. And, importantly, it remains that way throughout the data lifecycle management process.
