It’s no secret, Every Business must become a data business.  Data now sits at the heart of modern decision making and is key to understanding customers, partners, suppliers, marketing strategies, and ultimately your bottom-line.   To begin to embrace the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Big Data you need to fully understand your data environment. Start singing the praises of Data

Using data as the basis of everything you do is common sense, but it does require a cultural shift. It requires a move away from gut-based decisions, or a "this is how we've always done it" approach, to a more analytical process.

Everyone across your business needs to understand the modern value of data.

Data advocates can play a key part here.  Communication and openness is critical to your success. Engage people on your data strategy, define the benefits to individuals and the company.  Make it real to them.  It’s important to focus on the positive outcomes and how you will get there.

As with any good strategy, you need to regularly review and revise it.

Have both your data and analytics technology needs evolved? Have your business needs changed?  How do you align current or new analytics tooling to your ever-changing business needs?

To create a data culture, start thinking of your data as a 'business asset'.  One that’s as important as your product, service, employees and partnerships.  When you adopt this mentality, you are more likely to monitor it and review on a regular basis.

Evolve as your business needs change

How do you want to use data in 5 years' time, or even 2 years' time? It will most likely be different to how you use your data today.

Common sense dictates that your data strategy should evolve and shift with your business needs.

As you begin your data journey, you will discover new ways to leverage data.  For example, extending analytics to monitoring, or using it to drive automation and efficiency.

Once you have the data infrastructure in place, it becomes far easier to extend the applications to other areas of the business, or to the edge with IoT.

The changing technology landscape

Collection methods and analytics are evolving at a faster pace than most technologies. Companies who do not revise their data strategy in line with developments, risk being left behind.

Creating a data culture can take time and dedication to get company-wide buy-in.
